Hollywood & Bollywood . . .

Family values from the film “KKKG”

In this film, family is the main aspect. All other things are circling around this Indian family. That’s why we can see Indian or Asian values; like being family oriented in all situations, listen to family members, respect elders etc.

Importance of Songs in Masala Films of Bollywood

Songs in Hindi Masala films are like the souls for them. They take a big part of the full length film & tell very important part of film’s story in their own way. Some times they are edited in a film just to add some interesting facts in viewers mind about the film or the film story. Some times they take place to introduce some new twists in film’s plot. They got music, dance, colorful dresses, eye catching sides etc to entertain viewers. They rest the viewer’s eyes by showing them some pleasant moments & make them stay on their sit as their films are long in length.

Difference between Hollywood & Bollywood films

There are big differences between Hollywood & Bollywood films & their conventions. They some times use same kind of plot, theme, film techniques or iconography for their films; but not every time or in frequent. In Hollywood, they use many different plots & themes but in Bollywood when a plot hits; they try to make different film out of that same plot & theme. Even Hollywood film studios are full of high-tech equipment but Bollywood is not like that. But now days, it is starting to use new techniques in their film but not at Hollywood’s height.

Feminism

There were three waves in the history of feminism. They first was from nineteenth to early twentieth, second one was in the mid twentieth from 1960s to 1970s & the third one is running till now from late twentieth (1990s). In the last wave it became global issue.

Feminism concerned with women’s right in every area where women are involve. It is to make sure the equal rights of women in every sector with men.

But feminism is not running alone; racism, homophobia, classism & colonization also there & they are affecting the thought of feminism.

In Bangladesh females are not getting any advantage of feminism in any way; because we don’t have many feminist in our country. Girls are in treated as the same way before.

Representation

From the Oxford dictionary I have come to know of certain meanings of the word “Representation”: presence, appearance, an image, figure, exhibition, revealing fact, statement, presentation of thoughts etc.

Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak finds distinction between “Vertretung” & “Darstemmung.” The former she refers as “stepping in someone’s place…..to tread in someone’s shoes.”- In which a representer speaks for the needs & desires of somebody or something. On the other hand, “Darstemmung” is representation as re-presentation, “placing there.”

Then Ella Shohat says that, we should constantly question the representations. We have to scrutinize the representations to find out who represents, who is being represented for what purpose, at which historical moment, for which location, using which strategies & in what tone of address.

Another point to be noted that, representations for minor groups are though few in numbers; they can be exaggerated & flawed. In this type of representation, few characters are chosen to be typical to represent the whole group & other minor groups as well. As we know that the representations have an effect on human lives, the impact of the minor representations can not be ignored. They are so vulnerable & can play a harmful role in society because they are not well elaborately organized.

Therefore finally we have to keep in mind that, what ideological significance a representation holds, what is it’s goal & consequences before presenting.

Semiotics

We make meanings; we like to make meanings out of anything. Mostly we make meanings unconsciously. When we have any meaning; we can mark the thing as SIGN.

We can point two-part model of sign. One is signifier & the other one is signified. Signifier is the form of the sign & signified is the concept it represents. We can use a signified many things with just one signifier. The relation between signifier & signified is called signification.

The signifies don’t have any value themselves. Their value depends on other signs of that system or we can say the area or country. One sing can have different meaning in other country or region. Because the signifier system is mostly created by the society; some are natural too.

We can see three kinds of signifies; & conventionally they are Symbol/Symbolic, Index/Indexical & Icon/Iconic.

Symbols are created & not directly linked with the signified so one has to learn it; like alphabets, words etc. it is more conventional but in term of motivation it is not concerned as motivated.

Indexes are not the real resemble of the signified but directly connected with it; so one can understand the meaning of it easily. It is less conventional & more natural & motivated then symbols.

Icons are the direct resemble or the picture of the signified; & one can understand the meaning of it subconsciously; it means it is totally natural. It is not conventional but motivated then others.

Myth

With myth we can have a world view of a specific time, people, any practice or belief or natural phenomenon. It is more likely to have a relation with a historical event or deeds of any powerful human being or god. Cultural myths are mainly religion thoughts, some time it explains aspects of nature or human life, sometimes tells some extraordinary story or truth of some specific period of time. It creates a model of how this world can go ahead. In the early 19th century the modern study of myth arose.

Wag The Dog

Wag The Dog” is a very funny satire with a serious message about the politics & entertainment market.

It was directed by Barry Levinson & screenplay co-written by David Mamet with Hilary Henkin. It cast Robert De Niro,Dustin Hoffman, Anne Heche, Woody Harrelson, Denis Leary, Andrea Martin, Williae Nelson, Suzie Plakson, Kirsten Dunst & William H. Macey.

It started with a sex scandal of a sitting president with a Firefly Girl just before two weeks of Election Day. So his top aide Winifred (Anne Heche) calls a spin doctor Conred Bream (Robert De Niro). He decided to give the public bigger new then the sex scandal & manufacture a war between United State & Albania co-working with a Hollywood producer Stanley Motss (Dustin Hoffman).

They decided Albania because this name seems evil & no one knows anything about this country. They use slogans, a theme song, merchandised links & sympatric characters. They make big news of it by Television but did not even use any bullets. But public believe it because it was in Television. And at last they succeed.

In this film, the spin doctor is wagging the dog & I must add that, media & public of United State is the DOG. Director & writer both tried their best to provide us the point of view to see political things differently. Each actor put their best in this film & made it more realistic & funny at the same time.

Constructivism

Constructivism is important in every sector learning or knowledge.
Its main idea is that, we learn with the help of our previous knowledge. It divided the learning process in to tow ways.
First one is, we learn everything by being influenced by known things, known situations, known understandings. There is no way that we can learn anything from the beginning.
Second one is, we learn actively. We learn by knowing our previous knowledge & using them as a judge.
It has important role in teaching. Teaching is not the flow of knowledge from enlightened to unenlightened. It means teachers can’t teach any one they can just guide learners they way to the knowledge. Teachers should note the prior knowledge of learners & use different situations for different learners. Teachers can ensure that learners are using then previous knowledge to build the new one. If the knowledge is actively build in present time then teacher must give time to make it strong.
Learning is a constructive process, & we need instruction to learn. So then instructions must come from a trained teacher. Teachers teach us how they are taught.

Reality

Reality: To me reality is what I know about something at this very moment.

From my point of view, smoking is bad, & it is important or reality to me. I personally feel this & have some experience of its bad effects from my family members, friends & especially society.

But it is a rare feeling. Many people do smoke, & they have their own excuses to do so. So, what is reality to me is may not be reality to others. And even my own feeling or understanding could be changed in the long run.

Social Construction of reality

Renaissance in a sense means to me the process of changing the cultural thoughts, changing the way in one think. When it happens to some one or to a group of peoples, it causes them to think in a different way, to find out the differences between past & future.

Nicola Machiavelli was an admire of the wind of change of thoughts. He explained why ancient ways of thought can’t be revived.

Edmund Burke admires the Great French Revelation of 1789. But he did not think that to change the whole cultural believes or to start with new believes possible & not even desirable. Because we the peoples are not pure blank. So we must listen our past too.

Doctrinaire Radicalism is the belief where some people want to change every cultural thought from the blank period. This way was first thought by Thatcher.

“A priori” is something logical. That means we need to think logically about thoughts, believes & all.
